Dr Greg Peterson

Dedicated Professional Counselor, Higher Education leader, and Advocate Educator on Mental Health, Wellbeing, Leadership, and the Impacts of Climate Change

Dr. Greg Peterson served as the first-ever Director of Student Wellness at the University of Portland, overseeing the Counseling Center, Wellness Promotion, Interpersonal Violence Prevention Programming, and Care Team.  He served as Director of the Counseling Center at Concordia University-Portland, before its closure in 2020, and as a community mental health clinical supervisor.  He has supervised counselors in training since 2015 and has served as contributing faculty in four Master of Counseling programs since 2016. Dr. Peterson has been helping clients find new perspectives and create change in their lives since 2012.

Dr. Peterson is passionate about educating individuals and professionals on the mental health impacts of climate change.  His work in climate justice advocacy earned him the 2024 Counselors for Social Justice Climate Justice Award.  His dissertation research, "Construction and Validation of the Climate-Aware Counselor Scale," was the first scale to help counseling professionals assess their competency in providing services that address and mitigate the impacts of climate change on mental health and well-being.  He has recently published the final form of this scale, the Climate Change Counseling Scale, in his peer-reviewed journal article, "Development and Initial Validation of the Climate Change Counseling Scale," published in Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, which can be found here.  He has been an invited content expert on the mental health impacts of climate change since 2021, when he was invited to join the Western Region Association for Counselor Education and Supervision's special task force on Climate Change and Sustainability in Counselor Education.  In 2023, he was invited to join the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Climate Change and Environmental Justice Taskforce as a content expert in mental health impacts of climate change and Climate Justice.  The ACES Climate Change and Environmental Counselor Education Competencies were completed and approved by ACES in 2025.

Dr. Peterson understands that climate change affects our lives in numerous ways and can manifest in various forms. He offers specialized consulting services to help universities, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and other institutions to train staff and develop systems to help with the mental health impacts of climate change. He can provide support and guidance on how to manage the stress and anxiety that can arise from climate change-related issues.
