Dr Greg Peterson
Dedicated Professional Counselor educating on the Mental Health Impacts of Climate Change
Dr. Greg Peterson served as the Director of Student Wellness at the University of Portland, overseeing the Counseling Center, Wellness Promotion, Interpersonal Violence Prevention Programming, and Care Team. He served as Director of the Counseling Center at Concordia University-Portland before its closure in 2020 and as a community mental health clinical supervisor. He has supervised counselors in training since 2015 and has served as contributing faculty in four Master of Counseling programs since 2016. He is a contributing faculty member at Walden University in the clinical mental health counseling Master's program. Dr. Peterson has been helping clients find new perspectives and create change in their lives since 2012.
Dr. Peterson is passionate about educating individuals and professionals on the mental health impacts of climate change. His dissertation research, "Construction and Validation of the Climate-Aware Counselor Scale," was the first scale to help counseling professionals understand their competency to provide services that help address and mitigate mental health and well-being impacts due to climate change. He has recently published the final form of this scale, the Climate Change Counseling Scale, in his peer-reviewed journal article "Development and Initial Validation of the Climate Change Counseling Scale," published in Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling and Development, which you can find here. He has been an invited content expert on the mental health impacts of climate change since 2021, when he was invited to join the Western Region Association for Counselor Education and Supervision's special task force on Climate Change and Sustainability in Counselor Education. In 2023, he was invited to join the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Climate Change and Environmental Justice Taskforce as a content expert. He is currently working collaboratively with the taskforce to develop Climate Change and Environmental Justice Counselor Education Competencies.
Dr. Peterson understands that climate change impacts our lives in many ways and can take many forms. He offers specialized consulting services to help universities, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and other institutions to train staff and develop systems to help with the mental health impacts of climate change. He can provide support and guidance on how to manage the stress and anxiety that can arise from climate change-related issues. Dr. Peterson is committed to providing the highest quality care to his clients, individuals, couples, and companies.
